About

The core of Collaboratic was developed by my colleagues and I after working with numerous community leaders and groups in Santa Barbara during the 1990s. We discovered, through observation and practice, that the methods of guiding group discussion did not rise to the level of sincerity that participants brought to the table. Those methods often resulted in rambling meetings, frustrated participants and often little to show but a laundry list of disjointed action items. It seemed to us that the prevailing notion of a problem (an unwelcome matter that must be dealt with) did not provide the clarity necessary for effective and efficient discussions. We thought we could do better and we asked ourselves “What is a problem?” The result was the simple problem framework. Unfortunately, we didn’t get very far in fleshing it out and we eventually went our separate ways. But I’ve been thinking about it since and that simple framework has evolved into Collaboratic. I think it has great potential.
